Class of 2012 vs Class of 2002 by Tayto2000in Boxing

[–]youhavethenerve 1 point2 points ago

Great picks. Here's my minor quibbles:

Bernard Hopkins The 2002 version of him would have been interesting against the 2002 version of RJJ. I doubt the 2012 version of Hopkins beats the 2002 RJJ — though it will still be competitive.

Tim Bradley We'll only find out how good he is by how he fares against Pacquiao.

Good god. He's got two days left. This is really stupid.

What happens from the Mayweather/Cotto and Pac/Bradley fight results? by GhostlyEmployeein Boxing

[–]youhavethenerve 4 points5 points ago

He's the legitimate Middleweight champ and his fight against a top 3 "irish" contender on St. Patty's day didn't even merit a PPV.

PPVs mean two things:

  1. The fight is so good, people are willing to pay to see it (example: Cotto-Margarito II)

  2. The fight is so bad, the TV network is unwilling to pay to broadcast it (example: Hopkins-Dawson I)

Regarding a potential Mayweather-Martinez fight, I'm sure it would fall in the first category. Mayweather-Ortiz did, and Ortiz isn't any more of a star than Martinez. He's definitely not the same calibre of fighter, but he still made it to a PPV fight.

The way I see it, if Martinez is good enough to headline an HBO show, he's good enough to be a Mayweather opponent on a PPV special.

I don't really know enough about Bradley as to speculate on what his odds of an upset are. I sincerely doubt that Top Rank would set Manny to face a fighter they thought had a legitimate chance of beating him in this stage in his career. Right now he is Top Rank's cash cow and they are going to milk him for as long as they can, if he takes a loss then he will likely lose that cash cow status.

Bradley is very good.

He won his first title against Junior Witter by travelling to Britain and swiping it from the hometown hero. Bradley followed up by winning another title against Kendall Holt, and unifying against Devon Alexander. Bradley is undefeated, and regarded as the #1 Jr. Welterweight — a division stacked with talent.

If Bradley wins, it won't be that much of an upset since he's regarded amongst the top 10 P4P fighters. In fact, it would be less of an upset than if Cotto beat Mayweather.

This is a risky fight for Pacquiao — but Pacquiao must feel compelled to prove something. Perhaps it's his showing against Marquez the last fight, but a lot of people think Pacquiao's no longer at his peak. Winning against Bradley will prove to others that Pacquiao is still legitimate.

On the other hand, this is not a risky fight for Arum. Arum promotes Bradley. As well, Bradley is 28-years-old, is American, and has a squeaky clean image (apart from his penchant to headbutt). This is gold for Arum, and could be his next cash cow once Pacquiao retires — which will probably happen sooner rather than later.

Regardless, this is the best possible fight for Pacquiao to have made.

I'm just wondering what will happen based on the results of the two big fights in the Welterweight division?

The two big fights in the Welterweight division are Bradley-Pacquiao and Ortiz-Berto II. Mayweather-Cotto is NOT a Welterweight fight, but a Jr. Middleweight fight. In fact, Mayweather is going up a division to fight Cotto.

But would Cotto and Bradley square off?

Probably not. Cotto hasn't fought at Welterweight for years, and Bradley is actually a Jr. Welterweight. If he wins against Pacquiao, he'll probably stay at Welterweight.

And what happens if there's an upset, or even two?

Who knows. One thing is for certain, though. Boxers fight for two reasons: pride and money. Perhaps there will be rematches. If the financials make sense, that's what will happen.

If Cotto beats Mayweather, will he get a shot at a Pacquaio rematch?

Unlikely, unless Cotto agrees to fight at Welterweight. Pacquiao steadfastly refuses to fight above 147.

It might make more sense for Cotto to either fight Saul Alvarez, Sergio Martinez, or rematch with Mayweather.

If Bradley beats Pacquaio and Mayweather wins, will they fight?

This is more likely than Pacquiao-Cotto. Bradley wants to fight Mayweather more than he wants to fight Pacquiao.

However, Mayweather might want to fight Martinez. There's a lot more potential chatter about that fight, since Martinez is willing to fight Mayweather for less money than Pacquiao — and this would actually be a better fight right now than Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Wouldn't surprise me if Chavez is a cheat.

Macklin is in the "very good fighter" range but I don't think anyone would call him an elite boxer.

I think we can call him an elite middleweight.

[–]youhavethenerve[S] 7 points8 points ago

Sure, I understand where you're coming from, but I'd like to hear your argument. In my view, the only two fighters who could be better than Martinez are Pacquiao and Mayweather. However, if you take a look at their previously level of competition we have:

  • Pacquiao winning a close, disputed decision against Marquez; winning against a faded Mosley.

  • Mayweather winning via cheap shot against Ortiz; his previous fight before that being in 2010 against faded Mosley.

How are these wins better than Martinez' wins against Pavlik, Williams, Dzinzurik, Barker, and Macklin — four of which were KO victories?

Povetkin-Huck was the best heavyweight fight I've seen in 10 years! by youhavethenervein Boxing

He fought Damian Wills last August, and Cedric Boswell a few months before that.

I'm not disagreeing with you but that was then, this is now. Sans Klitschkos, these two are as elite as it gets nowadays.

The heavyweight division may be shit, but this was a welcome respite. Loved the fight. Would watch a rematch.

Seth Mitchell has only fought one C-level fighter so far, and that's Timur Ibragimov. Before he fights Arreola, I'd like to see him against an Oliver McCall or David Tua.

Hopefully, he'll have an active upcoming year.

Complete Huck vs Povetkin fight *youtube* by OGBlueMercuryin Boxing

[–]youhavethenerve 1 point2 points ago

The ref was annoying. It's interesting to me that Freddie Roach thought the constant breaks were favouring Huck more. I thought it prevented us from seeing some decent inside fighting.

Watching the fight again, I think there's one thing that kept Huck from KOing Povetkin: lack of uppercuts when Povetkin ducked down. That would have finished him.

I agree. My only (microscopic) quibble is that I think Seth Mitchell might be good enough to take on a Klitschko by that time.

Adrien Broner KOING Eloy Perez *youtube* by OGBlueMercuryin Boxing

[–]youhavethenerve 3 points4 points ago

If Broner lost, then blamed his toe, I'd think he was damn annoying.

As it is, he makes for amusing press conferences, ring entrances, and post-fight interviews. Personally speaking, I find it hysterical that he's got a guy who brushes his hair after a fight. It's pretty obvious he's conjuring up Gorgeous George.
