AskNBA - Who are today's most fortunate/unfortunate NBA stars? by TeddySpatchin nba

I just think there was some bad coaching/management decisions. For example, on that 66 win team I think their top guys were Lebron, Big Z, Williams, Gibson, West, and Varejao. Also, I believe their most effective playoff per-minute group was LBJ, Williams, Gibson, West, and Varejao. Now, that's a fine team, but their obvious weakness is height. Thus, they run up against the Magic, who have Turk, Lewis, Courtney Lee, Pietrus, etc... and they can just bomb 3s over the Cavs all day and everyone but Lebron is lucky to even get a hand in their faces. And, it wouldn't have gotten better as the Lakers would have destroyed them inside and outside with Pau, Kobe, Odom, and Bynum (who may have been hurt that year I can't remember). Anyway, my point is, I just don't see the the logic of stockpiling 5'10 to 6'1 players to fill your 1, 2, and 6th man spots. Especially when you can't play Varejao and Big Z at the same time, because your team needs to run and Varejao was an offensive liability unless he's in transition. Those teams were obviously incredibly talented, but not built for the playoffs and struggled to get easy buckets unless Lebron was involved. That and a clear size disadvantage typically doomed them. Edit: Also, as a Wolves fan I like to think I am painfully aware of how stupid it is to load up on players who have the exact same skill set.

VDN got the job because he was an incredibly cheap option, which Sterling loves. If I remember correctly, money was a huge thing in this coaching search not only because Sterling is cheap, but also because they still owe Dunleavy quite a bit of money.

Can anyone identify a former Super Bowl winning player by PastyPilgrimin nfl

[–]tennmyc21 0 points1 point ago

Occasionally the team will get a ring for an old-time player who contributed to the team in ways other than playing. Say he mentored the linebackers, gave a rallying speech at a game/playoff game, or just had a kickass career and never got a ring (granted Carson already had one), or whatever. The Colts did this for Edgerrin James, and I've heard of a few other examples.

Well, they remind me of these old-school Batman underwear I had when I was little and used to love (don't judge...this was like the 3rd or 4th thought after looking at the pictuer...not the 1st). In the spirit of full disclosure, and because you were so kind to show off your lovelies, I had to throw them away after a kindergarten accident. Very sad day. Also, kind of funny the things you remember from when you were a wee babe. So, now we can both be embarrassed.

Any stories about meeting an NBA player? I have one. by nba4722in nba

[–]tennmyc21 13 points14 points ago

I've got kind of a cool one. I was at a restaurant with a friend when I was like 10 or 11. Anyway, we're walking through being inquisitive 10 year olds and we see JR Rider. We're about 10 feet from him, and have this loud whisper argument about whether we should approach him or not (for a Timberwolves fan this was a very big deal). Anyway, in some sort of odd twist, we decide against it because he was enjoying his meal. So, we walk away and go to our table. About 10 minutes later he and Terry Porter, who I guess was with him the whole time, come up with signed hats and basketballs. They thank us for not interrupting them, apologize for taking too long to run out to their cars and get the signed gear, and shoot the shit with us for a couple minutes. Made me love JR Rider no matter the stories you constantly hear about him.

Out of curiosity what do those skivvies say? They look kind of cool. Also, kind of obvious here, you don't look so bad yourself.

Looking for Boxing Club in Boston by losdos1989in boston

[–]tennmyc21 2 points3 points ago

It's pretty solid. The guys who teach know what they're doing and are pretty fun. The work outs vary a lot by instructor, but they're all pretty challenging and fun. I would say the downsides are that it's really expensive (but pretty much all the gyms here are) and it's an extra $25 a month if you want to go to unlimited boxing skills classes (as opposed to just conditioning classes). I think that's kind of ridiculous, but it probably cuts down a lot on how many people are there, because the classes can get packed. Anyway, it's definitely a great gym and a fun work out.

Just how special was LeBron's performance? by posthocin nba

[–]tennmyc21 3 points4 points ago

It's a great basketball move if the refs are going to call it (which they do). Take the Barbosa play. He barrels into Barbosa, who is way smaller than him, and gets to take an easy lay-up after drawing the contact, getting a 3 point play. Not sure what about that is bad basketball. Blame the refs or the rule or whatever, but if it's there he'd be stupid not to take it.

What's your favorite NFL memory from when you were young? by faaaaaakkin nfl

[–]tennmyc21 0 points1 point ago

I went to a Steelers-Titans game when I was in middle school. Earlier, when we lived in PA, I went to some games at Three Rivers and those were incredible. However, at this particular game I was with my friend and his dad. His dad sold sports equipment for a living, and managed to get some tickets right on the 50 in the 3rd row and we could hear everything. My 2 memories from that game: 1. Jerome Bettis is an incredibly nice guy even on the field. He was joking about how he was fat and slow, but had quick feet and that's why he was successful. 2. Lee Flowers talked more shit than anyone I have ever heard. It was non stop too. It didn't matter if he got leveled, or lit someone up, he jumped right up and started running his mouth. It was pretty light-hearted and even the Titans players laughed at a lot of it.

There definitely is. I actually just listened to an interview with Danny O'Connor who talked about how boxing is kind of being overtaken by MMA. Anyway, a lot of MMA gyms also have some pretty good boxing instructors. The obvious downside is that there may be 2 boxing class per day, so if they don't match your schedule you're kind of screwed. Red Line Fight Sports in Cambridge is pretty solid, and their boxing coaches are both great. Kind of a hike for you from Wellesley. Anyway, given everything you've said I'd say Nonantum is your best bet. Check out a class from them. They say on their website that you can only come by and watch, but if you come in work out clothes and talk to them a little bit they'll let you jump in.

I looked extensively for a boxing gym here, and Nonantum is a good, old-school boxing gym. I eventually settled on Peter Welch's because it's so close to me, but you can't go wrong with either. My favorite of all the ones I went to was Boston Boxing and Fitness. It felt like an old school gym and the trainers there would pull you aside and work with you even if you just showed up on your own time to train and weren't going to a class. Unfortunately it was too far for me.

Elway never passed for 30 TD's in a season. by LinuxUser4Lifein nfl

He was in an offense that racked up 1,000 yard rushers like it was nothing for part of his career. Also, back in his day passing near the goal line just didn't happen.

Is it better to build a team to exploit your division's weaknesses, or try build an overall solid team? by ReaganSmashKin nfl

[–]tennmyc21 0 points1 point ago

Probably smarter to just build an all around solid team and base it on league trends. For example, the league is currently stocked with high octane passing offenses, so it's probably a good idea to have some solid CBs and safeties. Also, probably fairly smart to build an offense that can run the ball outside the tackles a little bit, since so many teams have pass rushing specialists on the outside of their defenses. Either way, stock pile the most talented players you can find and work it out from there. Eventually, once you've filled out the top half of your roster, get guys who are elite at one skill and put them in advantageous positions where they utilize this skill almost exclusively at times when having such a specialized player on the field doesn't hurt you (Belichick is a master of this).

I always liked the George Gervin comparisons. Not an all around player (getting there though) but can score at will even though they're painfully skinny.

Actual Australian School Answering Machine Message‏ by antdudein education

[–]tennmyc21 1 point2 points ago

I was actually just reading about the Australian education system the other day. Apparently, since the country is so vast and sparsely populated kids can be zoned hundreds of miles from their respective schools. This pretty much cuts out bus transportation. The kids have to call/Skype/use some form of technology to attend class, which is also problematic in some provinces apparently. Not sure if that's relevant to the 15-30 absences or not, but thought it was interesting none the less.

RC Buford(Spurs GM) with 0 Executive of the Year Award. That is a joke... by spursofthemomentin nba

[–]tennmyc21 1 point2 points ago

He probably gets overshadowed because everyone thinks Pop does most of the work. Anyway, Buford's been amazing. That George Hill trade was great, because it brought them Leonard. Then, to replace Hill they get Mills and also bring in Splitter, and late in the season grab Diaw. Like Bill Simmons said, now they're essentially a FIBA team with better players because they have flexible big men, can swing the ball like crazy, and have guys who can slash to the basket at will.

Unable to read; don't know why. Recommend me a page-turner that isn't pulp to get me "back into it." by hacksawjimin books

[–]tennmyc21 1 point2 points ago

I go through periods like this every now and again. I'll fly through a few great books then just kind of lose interest in reading. I'd step away from the classics and read something a little less "heady" for lack of a better word. Anyway, I usually pick either a fast paced spy book (Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series is good for this) or something really funny that keeps me interested. If you want to go the funny route try A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, or really almost anything by him.

Help - Relocating to Boston - Have Any Suggested Locations? by patrick721in boston

[–]tennmyc21 1 point2 points ago

I live walking distance from Inman Square at the moment, so I'll throw in my 2 cents. It's a really fun, kind of hipster place. There's not too much public transportation out that way, so it's somewhat isolated from the city. It's pretty young, maybe mid-20s to early 30s ish, and has a lot of cool shops, restaurants, bars etc... It closes down about 12am-1am on the weekends, and where I live can be pretty lively at night. It can be annoying, but most of the time it's not loud enough to keep me up or anything if I have work. There's a decent amount of parking (most apartments offer rented spots for extra $), and I've never really struggled to find on street parking ($20 a year in Cambridge) unless it's after a snow storm. Sounds like you're on the right path with Newton/Milton/Watertown. Inman offers a younger, more city-like vibe than those. Also, I love Milton if you live close enough to the T or the Trolley. Good luck on the move!

Too bad about Jones. The quote from the Dr. make it sound like they think his career is over. I couldn't imagine what it's like to devote 2 years to playing football again then being told you can't. Hopefully it works out for him and he catches on somewhere else.
