My dad broke his arm and the VA just sent him home. Uh...what? by i-speak-liesin AskReddit

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd 0 points1 point ago

I'm not so sure about that. I broke my arm while Mountain biking a couple of years ago. It was a Friday and they sent me home too with a bunch of pain killers and a splint. I didn't get an appointment to get it set until the following tuesday. Granted I was a teenager at the time and it was a private hospital so age def. wasn't a factor. It does seem a bit strange to me given his age but at least the "it can wait a couple of days if he's not bleeding" attitude was pretty much what I got too.

When I see 'eastern' lettering, eg japanese/korean, I consider it complex and beautiful. Do their societies see 'Western' lettering as crude and simple? by OJMCin AskReddit

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd 2 points3 points ago

Eah that's really hard to work with because how do you define everything that makes up the language? Is it just the living components of the modern variant or do you take into account the historical components that aren't as commonly used? What about slang and regional differences? What roll do they play in defining fluency?

I taught languages for awhile and our general rule of thumb was that your adv. adult in most Western countries uses around 3000 distinct words in common, everyday conversation. If you can get a handle on those basic constructs then you were a proficient speaker of a given language.

Watching Game of Thrones in Berlin? by awkward_everythingin berlinsocialclub

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd 1 point2 points ago

Is this still active? I'd be down. I'm almost caught up with the latest season and I do have a big Apartment and a roommate who's also into Game of Thrones. Are we really interested in making this happen?

Edit: I live in Warschauer Str. if it makes a difference.

Hey I don't know if it's the same situation but I'm running a mac with a german Galaxy s2. I was told that Kies doesn't support updates on mac yet but that they are going to release an update in Q2 for Kies that will allow it. It might have been BS but I've been waiting on the update for weeks now and get the exact same error message when I try to update.

Should i just get a Galaxy S2? by Sidetrackingin Android

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd 2 points3 points ago

Eah... I just got one myself and I don't think it's really "behind" as it were. Hardware-wise its pretty much as up to date as most users will need unless you really want the quad-core power that some of the new handsets are packing. But if you're not looking at spending any serious time with high-end gaming beyond what is currently on the market, it will suit you fine.

I actually used to work at an Android blog and 3rd party store and it is the phone we most often recommended in the past couple months purely from a cost benefit standpoint.

Help: Need Work Visa For Freelance Journalist by revengemonkeythe2ndin germany

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd[S] 0 points1 point ago

Hey thanks for your information. I just got through talking to HR at the company and they told me the same thing you did. I had been to the Ausländerbehörde a couple of weeks ago and was told that only EU-citizens could register as freelancers and only in certain rare circumstances that Americans would be allowed to. That's what got me nervous about trying to change my visa over, which is why I decided to ask reedit. After making a couple more phone calls I think that the woman who told me that was smoking something. So that's again for the information!

Help: Need Work Visa For Freelance Journalist by revengemonkeythe2ndin germany

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd[S] 0 points1 point ago

They're looking into that right now but it's a bit unclear as a simple contract apparently isn't enough. With my previous job, the company had sponsored me which took care of my visa needs. However the TV station I will be working for has a company policy against sponsoring foreign nations, which is why they suggested I look into registering as a freelancer as they don't have direct experience with it. The thing is I might not need to be sponsored as I've lived in Germany for 6 years now and have been working for a year and a half now but they aren't sure. I'm meeting to discuss the contract situation next week, I'm just trying to get all the information I can so I know how to go forward. :D

Also remember that most korean style locks are not ment to be done as a simple submission in the way that MMA techniques are. You won't find many who will admit it, but most of the common locks in the Korean styles were developed as direct counters to Japanese style grappling and as such were the 2nd level of defense after the longer ranged attacks which were preferred by the Koreans. (I might be wrong on this but this is how I was taught the history of Korean martial arts) I practiced Tang Soo Do and Hapkido for around 10 years and we were always instructed to find "hidden attacks" we could use to soften up an attacker before we tried to use a lock. What that practically ment was trapping a limb and then throwing a couple of heel palms or elbows to get the guy distracted and then going in for a lock. My fav. was using the turns that you typically find in my wrist locks to sneak in a few elbow strikes to the attackers elbow and then going in for the lock.

To reddit's former camp counselors... What are your best/worst camp stories? by millionsofmonkeysin AskReddit

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd 2 points3 points ago

I was working at a language camp in the US when that happened. Our kids were almost exclusively the children of well connected political families and we had more then a couple of English diplomat kids (including several in my cabin) and I had to brake the news to them about the attacks. Being from the US, it was hard trying to console the kids but the whole thing took on a surreal note when our boss and head councilor then had to disappear for a couple of days to "deal with the issue" (whatever that meant) and we weren't allowed to mention his absence.

Redditors in mixed-race relationships, what's the worst thing you've had to deal with from ignorant or racist people? by sparkplugbuttplugin AskReddit

[–]revengemonkeythe2nd 6 points7 points ago

It's not exactly mixed race but when I was still living in Russia (I'm an American) my long-time girlfriend's family wasn't too keen on their daughter being with a foreigner so much so that one of her uncles let it be known that if he met me, he would kill me. At first when they told me that I laughed it off but they then had to actively uninvite him to all family events in St. Petersburg because they were actually worried he would try something. On the American side it was a bit better but every time we would come back to the US we had to tolerate comments about it being a "green card relationship" for her and people taking me aside and telling me that she was obviously using me just for my nationality. Which is kind of funny seeing as during the 6 years of our relationship we didn't once live in the US and she had no interest of actually leaving Russia. I guess that stereotype was just so intrenched in peoples minds that they just expected it.
