The likely reason iankellogg says Linux isn't considered Unix-based is because it was created from the ground up, as opposed to other operating systems that can trace their roots back to the original "Unichs"; like the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). Most every OS you come into contact with is, however, unix-like (including windows).
