Homebrewing a low cal dark beer? by patches152in Homebrewing

[–]jnish 0 points1 point ago

Unfortunately, most of the calories in beer come from alcohol. I once asked Jaime Jurado, then the director of brewing operations at the Gambrinus Company, how to make a beer with less calories and he simply replied "add more water".

Opinions of drinking daily or every other day? by alanmv567in beer

[–]jnish 3 points4 points ago

Actually, 1-2 drinks a day has been shown to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. More accurately, 260mL ethanol/week for men and 210mL/week for women, no more than 40mL/day (ie no binge drinking), and better to have daily consumption than just a few a week.

Also the key ingredient is ethanol, so wine, beer, and spirits all have the same effect. However, you'll find differing conclusions from studies (wine better than beer) because of the lifestyles of different type drinkers.

How has raising a family affected your choices about riding? by jnishin motorcycles

[–]jnish[S] 0 points1 point ago

I have the same belief that life should not be lived in fear and is the primary reason I have continued riding despite living in a heavily congested area. We do have life insurance (though I haven't updated them with the fact that I ride, primarily because I expect the rate to jump, and have a newborn).

Everything has its risks, not many of them carry the weight that a fatality can occur. Even as it is, what would have been a fender bender in a car sent me to the ER with the motorcycle and left me in crutches for 6 weeks while trying to help take care of a newborn. Even the smallest accidents can wreck your home life. So the question is "Is it worth it?" and can I live out life in another way that won't be as risky while still holding on to my values (which seems paradoxical as I believe nothing should hold you back from living life). I guess it's a balance act of living life and preserving life.

Thank you for this thoughtful perspective. I have a very strong opinion that lives should not be lived in fear. A body that is scar-free has been too sheltered. I hope my children one day will have the same outlook on life as you and I. It can be a fine line to draw balancing living life to the fullest while preserving life to the fullest.

I agree that the chances of serious injury are heavily mitigated by wearing full gear and riding safely. However, there are some unavoidable scenarios that can and do occur occasionally, especially with riding on the freeway during my commute. It's something that I need to mull over and talk with my wife about. Thank you again for your thoughts on the issue.

Actually my wife is completely supportive of me riding again and knows that I'm a safe rider. I use the bike as my primary vehicle because she uses the car.

I am pretty split in the middle with the decision. Yes, motorcycle fatalities are rare when you take all the precautions and ride carefully. However, as I explained to my wife the day of the accident, what would have been a fender bender in a car sends me to a hospital in a motorcycle. Thankfully it was just a fractured patella, but it's been a wreck on our lives as it is with a 5 week old and her having to drop me off at the train station every day so I can go to work. So even the minor injuries can make home life quite difficult, though as you point out injuries occur with life.

Pliny the Younger is supposedly the best beer in the world. What does that even mean? by JeromeTomorrowin TrueReddit

[–]jnish 2 points3 points ago

I certainly don't care for PtE. It's fairly unbalanced, too much hops without the malt backbone to hold it up (though there's way worse out there). Try a fresh bottle of Firestone Walker's Double Jack IIPA and you'll discover what I mean by maintaining balance while still having a huge hop-bomb.

What do you mean by 'prop it up'? Do you mean just keep it upright so the yeast settles to the bottom?

I've always wanted to have a campfire on Ocean Beach, seems fun despite all the hipsters.

Oxygenation by Dakillakanin Homebrewing

[–]jnish 5 points6 points ago

Oxygenation or Oxidation? Oxygenation refers to purposely adding oxygen to chilled wort for healthy yeast growth. Oxidation refers to exposing fermented beer to air which can indeed cause off flavors. And Hot Side Aeration (often abbreviated HSA) refers to exposing hot wort to air, which could theoretically oxidize the beer leading to off-flavors but, as Charlie Bamforth has argued, is pretty much non-existent since the yeast will clean up those precursors.

Fix or Sell as is? by jnishin motorcycles

[–]jnish[S] 0 points1 point ago

It's the fuel tank, priced at ~$640. I'll look at Ebay for used tanks before buying that, and there's some that are cheaper new at $400, but not for my model so I'll have to look into what the differences are.

  • Fuel tank: $640
  • Footrest: $65
  • Handlebar: $115
  • Mirror: $68
  • Turn signals: $58 ea.
  • Headlamp rim: $23

  • +tax/shipping ?

I am thinking the same about fixing it so that it'll be drivable, it's hard to sell something that you can hardly move due to the broken handlebar.

So did Roddenberry, or other Star Trek writers, come up with warping spacetime for travel or was the idea already around?

Did they call it warp drive in TOS? Just wondering which came first with the idea of warping spacetime, Star Trek or physicists?

How long would it take for this machine to run for the final gear to take one complete turn? by IFUCKINGLOVEMETHin askscience

[–]jnish 2 points3 points ago

Let's reverse this...

How fast would the first gear spin if you were able to turn the last gear (given it's now removed from the concrete) at say a modest 1 rpm? Would it even be possible?

Completed MSF Basic Rider Course a month ago. Enjoyed it so much I'm wondering if the other more advanced courses are worth while. by zundrain motorcycles

[–]jnish 2 points3 points ago

I'm in California and took both courses. The beginners course is how to ride a bike, the advanced course is how handle the bike. Yes there is overlap between the two (quick braking, tight cornering) but the advanced has tougher challenges and new ones too. New ones include one-handed weaving, last minute swerving, and the U-turn in a box. I do agree it could have been more challenging, but the big advantage is you actually know how your own bike feels during these maneuvers

I'm on crutches with a full leg brace and Caltrain shut their doors in my face. What are your public transportation misery stories? by jnishin sanfrancisco

[–]jnish[S] 1 point2 points ago

Heh, broken left leg here with a manual transmission too. This won't be forgotten next time I'm shopping for a car.

I still remember a time when I was commuting by train regularly when I was about to miss Stanford shuttle which would make me miss my once-an-hour train. I was so angry I threw my coffee thermos at the bus and it smashed against the rear panel. The bus stopped and I got on nervously... to this day I'm not sure if the driver knew I threw a thermos at his bus or just saw I was running behind him.

[–]jnish[S] 1 point2 points ago

It's a bit more aggravating when you reach to get onboard and the doors start closing. And actually the bus waited as I hailed them from across the street (and no, I wasn't the reason it was late; it got behind schedule later in the route). In any scenario it's madly frustrating to have doors shut in your face.

Well, would you not agree it's complex to implement these "platitudes"? For example, "justice for all" is a platitude, and we have a judicial system to implement that platitude. Not the greatest example because every organization is flawed, especially the judicial system, but you get the idea. So I would encourage not to disregard statements just because their broad or lofty. Rather, attack it in a very specific manner on how they can be realistically achieved. And that is the goal of the Occupy movement: to get people to recognize the issues and work together to come up with realistic solutions. Paul Krugman is an economist and contributor for the NY Times that sympathizes with the Occupy movement and has written up several articles on how the ideas of the movement can be specifically addressed and contributed to the Occupy Handbook that outlines concrete policy solutions. I encourage you to read some of these. Also Bernie Sanders, senator of Vermont, has these specific proposals. Like I said, it's out there if you take time to research it.

Hmmm, seems like you haven't taken the time to really listen to them (though I admit the ones on the streets aren't the greatest thinkers) or do reading on the topic. Just a few off the top of my head: publicly fund elections, restore Glass-Stegall Act, revoke corporate personhood, reform tax rates, eliminate revolving door politics, reform campaign finance, and limit corporate lobbying
