How do you properly "relaunch" Chrome? by aerobat97in chrome

[–]drmacinyasha 0 points1 point ago

Background processes. Easiest way is to sort by RAM usage, right-click the chrome.exe using the most RAM, then End Process Tree. Usually kills 'em all, but there might be a lingerer.

Publicity. You're talking about it, aren't you? I'd say the fact that this thread exists is proof that they were a success. How much of a success though, has yet to be seen.

Picking up a 7" and 10" Android tablet soon, suggestions? by kaji823in AndroidQuestions

ASUS TF300T is pretty easy to root, has stock ICS, and is incredibly useful, especially if you get the keyboard dock. I'm loving mine. The Tegra3 chip in it is speedy on Balanced or Performance mode. I haven't seen any issues.

Want to upgrade our phones for Sprint, but they want $10 ($40) more a month per phone for a service they don't offer (LTE/4G). by workahaulicin AndroidQuestions

Welcome to what we all complained about two years ago when they started this with the EVO 4G. They don't care, and it's not a "4G" fee, it's "enhanced data" which has no meaning. It's basically just a smartphone fee.

iirc, Goo's server checks every 15 minutes or so. After that it shouldn't be more than 10 minutes before the site has it populated. That can all vary by how busy the server is, how slow CM's servers are, etc.

Stream all the time at work, where the WiFi is unusable because it kills the connection. I also have 60GB of music, so caching it all doesn't exactly work... Plus I tend to make tutorial videos and the like, which lead to my /sdcard getting wiped. Re-downloading 15-20GB of music each week isn't too fun.

It could just be an issue with your connection, the peering your carrier has with the ISP used by CyanogenMod's servers, or just CyanogenMod's servers. GooManager pulls down files from Goo.im, which has some pretty decent peering now, and we're ironing out issues with the servers as fast as we can.

What is the directory of the external mini sd card on a rooted android running the CM9 nightlies? by MLB164in AndroidQuestions

I know the CM9 maintainers were trying to get a standardized method for separating eMMC, MTP, MicroSD, etc., but I never heard if they finalized it.

Go to Browse files>CM>Your device>Nightlies

It's possible that the ZIPs on the site aren't corrupt, but your download of them is.

It depends device-to-device. Generally it's /sdcard, /sdcard/external-sd, /mnt/sdcard, or something like that. Use the file manager that comes with CM to poke around in /mnt

That could be an EXT partition on the MicroSD card instead.

Download using GooManager. It'll check the MD5 as soon as the download completes. Sounds like your ZIP is messed up.

Chrome has been blocked at my workplace because IT deems it "insecure". Is there any validity to that? We can only use IE8 and Firefox 8. by jsunderlandin chrome

[–]drmacinyasha 11 points12 points ago

Chrome is the most secure, but odds are "security" isn't the real reason. PEBCAK-avoidance is. For example, at my current job they've banned Chrome, just because the timecard webapp is only compatible with IE7-9. Rather than stick a shortcut on the desktop to "iexplore.exe http://intranet/timecard.aspx", they force everyone to use IE. And it's not like they're shy about slapping 20 shortcuts on the desktop...

Which is more energy efficient? A roof painted black to save on the energy costs in the winter, or to paint a roof white to save the energy costs in the summer. by turduckenstanin askscience

[–]drmacinyasha 1 point2 points ago

From my experience working in the Facilities department of a few large buildings, white would be more efficient. It all depends on where you are, costs of utilities, what utilities you use for what, etc., but generally heating costs less than cooling.

For example, in our main building we have four large Trane Intellipak HVAC units (and a smaller Trane Voyager unit for the lobby). These suckers are the size of semi-truck trailers, and have six AC compressors, each.

Running just one of those to cool the supply air (what gets shoved down into the building's ducts) to 65F (pretty cold, but it could go all the way down to 45F before we risk freezing up coils) takes more power because of those compressors and the fans that would have to run, than having all four units heating the entire building. Thus why we have a white roof on each of our buildings.

The reason for this is how our building is designed: We have a large boiler which pumps hot water into conduits that run along the perimeter of the building, into radiators within some of the ducts, which then heats up the air, and blasts it out around the inside of the perimeter of the building. Air then gets sucked up into the return ducts located towards the center of the building. In this configuration, we just run the boiler, and each of the large units does minimal heating, instead just running their fans to push and suck air. Plus we have enough insulation that the building doesn't get too cold at night, and the units maintain the temperature overnight to a comfortable, but cool, temperature. In the morning, they roast the building (because everyone complains how cold it is outside, and they want heat inside, etc.) and then let the temperature settle until the sun can help heat the brick walls.

In the summer though, because of how much electricity those compressors suck up (and the fact that our IT admin, and each tenant's IT admin, likes to run their server rooms at 65F, causing the compressor for each server room to almost constantly run), we have to take aggressive anti-waste policies, like shutting off lights in the hallways, reducing from 32W to 28W fluorescent bulbs, and turning off 2/3 lights in office spaces (each desk has task lighting or a large floor-to-ceiling window). It's paid off though; we're now LEED certified, and have reduced electrical usage by about 20%, bumping us down a pricing tier for our local electric provider.

One thing that a lot of people don't factor in is the cost of maintenance of these roofs. For example, here in the Sacramento valley we get a lot of pollen, dust, and smog from San Francisco. Once per year, we have to take a pressure washer onto the roof of each building and spend a few months cleaning all the dust and dirt off each one. Imagine your car during pollen season not getting washed for a few weeks... Now with tens of thousands of square feet.

tl;dr: White is generally cheaper, because it's usually cheaper to heat than cool a building. YMMV depending on location, heating/cooling costs, utility rebates, and dozens of other factors.

Honestly? Nope. But finding your nearest HAM radio store and talking to the folks there is a good start. A fat budget also helps, along with a good amount of open space to string up antennae.

Outside of the Midwest or East coast, Sprint's WiMAX is pretty much non-existent except in large metro areas, or a freeway just outside said metro areas. The only reason I used to have Sprint was because they were slightly cheaper than Verizon, and unlike AT&T, actually had service where I lived. Then they just kept going downhill after the EVO gained popularity. Then they got the iPhone, and everything went to hell.

3.69GB of what partition? Where is it trying to save pictures? If I recall correctly, all of Moto's devices after the original Droid have about 40,000 partitions... One for apps and their data, system, cache, boot, bootloader, their driver installer fake-CD, an internal storage, a fake sdcard, real sdcard, sd-ext (because that /data partition just ain't big enough), etc.

They've been the ultimate douches to their customers in more ways than I can count. Most recently? Letting people keep grandfathered unlimited plans, then throttling the hell out of them after using a single gigabyte, just because nobody in their home area uses very much. Or their stock holders overwhelmingly voting against having ANYTHING to do with network neutrality. Or their CEO being the biggest douchebag when talking about customers and their wants.

Really, just do a quick Google search for them and associated news stories. Won't take long to get most people's blood boiling, assuming they're not as apathetic as my parents, or as ball-sucking-to-large-corporate-entities as Fox News.

Verizon at least has good coverage in Sacramento, and LTE is pretty much ubiquitous. The only times I've seen my LTE die off are when I'm in a place specially designed to kill radio waves (school, theater, datacenter, etc.).

You're lucky. Outside of the East coast or Midwest, WiMAX coverage is pretty much non-existent unless you're sitting in the middle of a major metro area or just outside one on a highway.

Either way though, you're still stuck with Sprint's wonderful 3G network as soon as your WiMAX drops off, except with an even lower priority on their towers since you're on Virgin, and then probably routed across several states to one of their less-than-a-dozen interchanges.

Remind me how you stream Google Music on that? That's my biggest data hog since I listen to music at work and on the road. Plus I have a feeling even that MVNO would have a shit-fest about someone using >10GB/month consistently.
