OMG FOOD! Japanese, Russian, Greek! by lstudin Boise

[–]dapperdan 0 points1 point ago

There used to be one downtown. The guy died of a stroke. There was another Korean restaurant on Maple Grove and Overland that went out of business. Then there was one on Milwakee and Fairview that turned into an abortion of Chinese buffet. Long story short, we've had several Korean restaurants that have failed due to lack of support. The next time one opens, make sure you patronize. I'm feeling a severe hunger for kimchi chigae and there's no place to quench it!

Hunting Near Boise? by Embergloin Boise

[–]dapperdan 2 points3 points ago

You're right in the heart of some fantastic hunting. Two years ago, I shot my deer about 5 miles south of Eagle on Private land.

If you head toward Horseshoe Bend and take a right toward Placerville you'll find quite a few elk. There are healthy Elk herds from Placerville all the way to North Idaho.

Elk hunters seem to prefer the Elk City and Lolo Zones but there's good hunting in the Sawtooth and Copper Basin regions. If you're like me, you'll want to hike into the Frank Church River of No Return area. You can get a flight in or you can hike in. You won't find a road hunter anywhere. No vehicles allowed.

If you like mule deer, the Owyhee mountain range is a designated trophy buck region. Goodrich Creek is also a good place for Mule deer.

If you're into White Tail, anything north of Riggins is premium White Tail territory.

Close to Boise, you'll find that Prairie has some good deer hunting and Elk. The steep hills above Arrowrock dam are pretty decent for deer hunting and there's lots of public land.

I suggest taking a look at the Fish and Game hunt planner. You'll find tons of info there. It's an amazing resource.

Bill Maher: Obama Is NOT The First Gay President + Mormon quips by dapperdanin exmormon

[–]dapperdan[S] 4 points5 points ago

The only thing Bill Maher has going for him is balls.

That and he's very funny and very good at his job.

Religulous was entertaining at times, but mostly just disappointing when he clearly misunderstood basic principles of Judeo-Christian beliefs, biblical facts, etc.

Bill is no different than the rest of us. He's bought into some pseudoscience issues like "Franken Food" and the anti-vaccine bandwagon, but I disagree that he misunderstands basic principles of Judeo-Christian beliefs. Judeo-Christian beliefs are no more valid than Greek mythology. We just tend to lend it more credence because it won dominance more than a thousand years ago and has benefited from over a thousand years of modernization.

I contend that if you take a step back from all those things that just seem to make sense because of what you've been taught to be normal in our culture, you'll find that Christianity is just as ridiculous(if not more) as Bill's position on vaccine.

Christianity teaches that God had to kill his own son so that the rest of us could be forgiven for not being perfect. It clearly teaches that people can be healed by the power of God. Many people have died over the past 100 years as the result of trusting God instead of seeking medical attention.

Bill isn't perfect and I don't agree with many of his stances. I don't agree with his stance on genetically modified food for instance. I still think Religulous was an effective and funny exercise of holding up a mirror to our overly religious culture to expose the laughable absurdities we consider normal.

Do you have some examples of beliefs that were unfairly lampooned by Religulous as the result of Bill's ignorance?

You're actually very lucky to gain your exit from the cult at such an early age. Just think how pissed you'd be if you'd remained in a cult and married Peter Priesthood and discovered all this bullshit after your 4th child.

Don't take offence that you won't be able to join in the "Santa Claus" parade. You're saving yourself from years of demeaning sermons because you were unfortunate enough to be born without a penis. Strong women and the Mormon cult have never gone together. Your life will be better off without it.

Does anyone ever agree with George Prentice's (Boise Weekly) movie reviews? I almost never do, and I certainly don't in this case! by whateverlolain Boise

[–]dapperdan 0 points1 point ago

There were just too many mismatched characters that don't belong in the same movie. Some characters didn't even make sense. Take Scarlett Johansson's character for instance. What's her super ability? And then there's Jeremy Renner's character. The guy's super accurate with a bow and exploding arrows. Then you throw in the Hulk who can do pretty much anything and Thor with godlike powers. It's like the whole concept was put together by a 13 year old with ADD.

There were too many overblown conflicts between characters and too much focus on special effects to tell a story. I think the focus on 3D is killing movies today. The money is spent on creating sequences that impresses in 3D but the story line suffers in my opinion.

There were a couple of funny one liners. The rest was Transformers all over again. This is a huge budget action film with very little plot or character development. It's Hollywood's new formula for success. Throw in super heroes with big name actors and a weak story line with multi-million dollar special effects. This was not even close to The Dark Knight.

Fully agree with him. Michael Bay couldn't have produced a more ridiculous abortion on screen.

Idaho makes another top 10 list. Thanks Right to Work! by dapperdanin Boise

[–]dapperdan[S] 2 points3 points ago

The aim of the Right to Work legislation not only destroys the power that unions have to improve the working environments of workers, it removes many rights you have as an employee.

Let me give you a for instance:

A man works for a company for 10 years. In the 10th year the company is taken over by a new entity. The new manager says he wants fresh blood and fires everyone that's been there for more than 5 years. In a "Right to Work" state, he's perfectly justified in his decision. An employer can terminate any employee without any cause whatsoever.

In a state that has protection, this employee would have the right to sue for wrongful termination.

The bill of sale we were given when the "Right to Work" laws were created was that the law would attract companies to the state. What it has done is welcomed low income cube farms to the state with no benefits and 3rd world working environments.

I personally am not affected by the current Right to Work laws. I don't suffer the horrid work environment that many in our work force endure. I speak out for those who do. Eliminating workers rights and undercutting their ability to use collective bargaining is wrong and attracts the wrong kind of businesses to Boise.

[–]dapperdan[S] 3 points4 points ago

It also takes away many rights that other states enjoy. This is a "no cause" state. An employer can fire you at any time without any cause. The basic rights of religion, race, sex, etc still apply but you get no other protections.

The idea behind the right to work laws was to attract businesses to the state. What do we get in return? Businesses that love to pay below the poverty line.

This city in particular has seen a boom in call center robot factories. Shitty jobs at low wages with no collective bargaining rights. We rank at the bottom for teacher pay.

One of the wonderful freedoms of our freedom loving blue state.

[–]dapperdan[S] 2 points3 points ago

Interesting that 8 out of 10 of the states that land in the bottom have enacted anti-union laws.

May just be a coincidence. It must also be a coincidence that the top 10 do not have these anti-union laws.

I believe Mormonism has fucked me for life by boyd889in exmormon

[–]dapperdan 2 points3 points ago

I second this. I was married at a very young age. I come from a family of 8 kids. I worked 40+ hours a week my senior year of high school. I served a mission for the cult with the money I saved. When I returned, I was a good little missionary and married my wife at the age of 22.

There was never money for college from the family with 8 kids. My father made a slightly better than average salary but there was definitely no money for college.

I started college and worked a graveyard shift at an electronics manufacturer. I did 12 hour shifts for a couple of years while attempting to attend college. The wife got pregnant and became a "stay at home" mom to raise our kids.

School didn't work out well for me. I basically only took math and computer science courses. My computer skills as an operator were noticed by my bosses and I moved into a report writing role.

I studied my ass off on new tech. I read tech manual after tech manual. Within a year I was promoted to the software engineering team. I started working on code at home and became the expert in a number of new technologies. I started getting requests for moonlighting jobs. My second child was born and I made the decision to quit going to school.

My contacts from my moonlighting landed me a job at a big startup. I worked for a year at the startup and found that one of my moonlighting projects was a reasonably successful and the tech was acquired by a company that offered me a job.

Long story short, I've never had a day of unemployment in more than 15 years. At this point, I have no debt and I manage a team of engineers for an incredibly successful start-up. I don't even consider myself any smarter than most. The truth is I was a C student in high school. I never finished college. Perhaps some day I will.

I contrast my experience with a close TBM friend. He went the route of lots of school and college debt. He had 3 kids right away and lived on his loans. He went to a private Pharmacy college. When he was finished, he had over $250,000.00 in debt. We both took about the same amount of time to get where we are today. I don't say this to brag but I currently make much more in salary.

Swiftblue makes a good point. Find something you love to do. I personally absolutely love my job. Become the expert. If that means going to school, go to school. College isn't the only route. Half of the people I manage have degrees in our field. The other half don't. Experience and the ability to get the job done is what matters.

The military route is a good one. I have good people that I manage that did the military route and one of my best friends from a previous job gained his skills in the Air Force.

You may think your situation is hopeless. If you do, it's a self fulfilling prophesy. I personally believe that it doesn't matter what field you choose. You can be wildly successful in any occupation if you are dedicated.

I now have a son that is getting ready for his future. I personally want him to go to college and get a degree in something. I don't recommend my way. I'm not advocating that people need to skip getting a degree or that college isn't important. At the same time, I agree 100% with Swiftblue that taking on huge amounts of debt to pay for college is a bad idea.

The fact is that companies want dedicated employees. They need the guy that's willing to pull an all nighter to get the job done. They need people that immerse themselves in their jobs and become the "go-to" guy.

I personally did a software project for a fiberglass manufacturer. I worked with the foreman on the manufacturing floor to implement the system. The guy had no educational background and was making over 100k per year. He was the most respected member of that team because of his intense dedication and the expertise he gained on the job.

There are many paths to success in this world. Don't allow your former cult to define success. Don't allow others to define what success means. It may not even be making a ton of money. If you're happy with a call center job that provides you with tons of free time and no outside responsibilities, you're a success. A forest ranger that finds extreme pleasure in his job in the outdoors despite a meager salary is a success in my book.

No it's very tame. They bless your head. Your chest, Your arms, Your loins.. I don't remember all of it. They had slits in the poncho where the guy reached in to do the blessing. You can find out about it online.

Why is it okay for mainstream conservative news outlets to attempt to link Obama to Islam but not okay to have an open conversation about Mitt Romney's actual religion? by MikkyfinNin politics

[–]dapperdan 0 points1 point ago

I don't think anyone would argue with the history of the priesthood authority being extended to blacks in 1978. The church isn't racist today, that's for sure. Not in doctrine nor in policy. By your logic, Planned Parenthood is still a racist organization (it's clearly not, but was founded by a racist).

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints can't have it both ways. They often quote the marvelous work in Africa that they're doing and the almost half million members they have there. When you add the African members in Latin America and North America, you come up with about 1,000,000 black members.

Assuming God lifted the Ban on these members from holding priesthood, why are they not represented in the leadership of the Mormon church?

Are we to assume that God is a racist?

Are we to assume that out of 1,000,000 black members, only one is righteous enough to hold a top leadership position? (General Authority)

I'm not "stacking the deck" here. I wasn't involved in choosing these men. The deck was shuffled and stacked by your church.

It's also not stacking the deck to quote scripture. I'm not going to paste the entire Book of Mormon into a comment forum. What we're actually experiencing is a re-writing of history.

If you go back and read President Kimball's conference talks relating to Native Americans, you'll see that dark skin was clearly considered to be a curse for wickedness.

"At one meeting a father and mother and their sixteen-year-old daughter were present, the little member girl-sixteen-sitting between the dark father and mother, and it was evident she was several shades lighter than her parents-on the same reservation, in the same hogan, subject to the same sun and wind and weather."

The deck, when it comes to Mormon racism and sexism, was stacked by your revered former prophets. The current Mormon leadership is currently pretending that the cards never existed instead of officially removing the cards in the form of a repudiation. If you want to know what that looks like see this article by the Southern Baptists.

Your attempt to distort the truth stopped working when Al Gore and Bill Clinton created the Internets. The LDS faithful like yourself want to deny, deny, deny the racism but 100+ years of racism can't be erased with a declaration.

I'll refer you to what another commenter placed in the discussion:

Item 1

Item 2

Sounds pretty racist.

On the topic of women: Explain why women weren't allowed to speak in General Conference until the 80s. Also explain why when the church holds a conference only 2 women speak in public.

Women's voices aren't valued. A 12 year old deacon has more authority and right to act in the name of God in the Mormon church.

I stand by my claim of racism and sexism. I was raised in the Mormon church and served a mission. I was taught these things as a child. Spending millions on an advertising campaign in attempt to bend the truth on the history of Mormonism will fail and is currently failing miserably. Best thing Mitt can do to win the election is disavow his church and forge his own trail.
