Cecily McMillan Interview: OWS Activist Describes Seizure, Bodily Injuries in Arrest by NYPD by Huplescat22in politics

there are plenty of tools who will say that she deserved it because she elbowed a cop in the face. As if that being true would make anything about this remotely okay.

Maybe I'm dumb, but what can conservatives gain from banning birth control? by JDRsqrdin politics

The government can force you to not say "fire" in a crowded theatre. Your rights do not extend so far as to infringe on others'.

edit: the government can take you down if you try to make your restaurant "whites only." Pretty much the same difference.

My religion forbids your existence. Just by being, are you violating my religious freedom? Fuck no.

You already have the freedom to not get married. You already have the freedom to not get an abortion. You're trying to impose your religion on others, which is pretty much the opposite of religious freedom.

human rights are real issues. You don't get to tell people that their oppression isn't important.

I know you don't think that every unwanted pregnancy ends with a birth. How many unwanted births would occur if there was less access to contraception?

the other consequence is that people are more desperate for money. Parents take on extra jobs, kids take on jobs, etc. The more desperate you are, the more willing to accept chickenfeed pay, no workplace safety, etc.

Abortion and Contraception are strawman moral dogma issues put fourth to create division. by [deleted]in politics

[–]JoelReinstein 4 points5 points ago*

Edit: previous comment probably didn't help anyone.

read this.

The original post is straight-up sexism. Dudes saying "your rights don't matter compared to X issue" is stupid, ignorant sexism. It also fails to recognize how issues are interconnected. I'm not saying abortion should be placed above issues like the NDAA and wars and such, as it seems to have been. But human rights are not a sideshow.

Also, as raskolnikov pointed out, distraction =/= straw man.

If you allow people to work when their marginal productivity is below the price floor/minimum wage then they might have a life outside your factory, in which they even get educated and take part in the democratic process! it would be an economic disaster, science says so

you can always count on naive morons complaining about reddit to get tons of upvotes. irony is awesome. Obviously, if there isn't a totally unified faction trying to take over the world illuminati-style, THERE ISN'T ANY CORRUPTION OR WRONGDOING OF ANY KIND! And you've never, ever seen a leaked memo in your life!*

Just using nuclear testing as an example. There's historical precedent for not only being tragically wrong about how safe something is, but for having ulterior motives to be "wrong." The FDA comes to mind.
