Alexander the Great literally changed the landscape a bit. He built a bridge out of stone and wood to Tyre (an island fortress) and earth/sand/whatever accumulated on it and the island is no longer an island due to him

Maybe you aren't being yourself enough, i don't know if thats the case but i reckon people could see that you're trying too hard to fit in, instead of it being a natural process with lime minded people

i'm sure a lot of them were just normal people and they realised it was wrong, but a fair few of them did believe it was right, they were convinced that it was for protection of their country and families, similar to (at the risk of offending people) how the US invaded the middle east to "protect their homeland".
