In your opinion, what videogame had the best opening act/scene? Why do you think it was the best, and what constitutes a great opener to you? by Nrksbulletin truegaming

CTRL+F.... Found it!

This is the one I came here to say. The opening scene of FF8 blew me away so much that I would start a new game sometimes just to watch the cinematic again.

Anyone else sincerely terrified for 10 in this episode? by atomik_aztecin doctorwho

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes, if not the favorite. Being able to convey such tenseness and terror with only the writing and the actors is an amazing feat that we haven't really seen since the haydays of The Twighlight Zone.

Anyone use SP2010 for Intranet sites? by housemein sharepoint

[–]Griven 0 points1 point ago

I will admit that "fairly sophisticated" is a subjective term.

One example is our asset tracking system. We created several lists, which contain information on assets, purchase orders, asset deployments, and assets that have been taken off the books.

We then used SharePoint Designer to create workflows that manipulate data between the lists (e.g., change the state of an asset when it is deployed or taken off the books), email asset stakeholders and accounting, etc.

In addition, we also modified the item views a bit so that, for example, when you look at an asset in the asset's list, you can also see all of its occurrences in the deployment records. I can't remember if that was done inside SPD or through the SP web interface.

True, upgrading is very straightforward and easy. Getting the bean counters to spend the money, however, has proven nigh impossible for reasons that I won't go into here.

I've built my company's intranet with SP2010. All in all, it's an amazing product that has served us extremely well.

First, what we did wrong:

  1. We bought the Standard license, instead of the Enterprise license. We later decided that we wanted features like web-based Infopath forms and Excel spreadsheets, which only come with Enterprise.
  2. We deployed it to a server, played around with it, and then made that the production server, without having wiped it first. This has led to some strange quirks in the event log regarding features that supposedly aren't working right, but in reality are working just fine.

Aside from our own screwups, SharePoint 2010 hasn't failed us or fallen short in any way. We've been able to build solutions for pretty much whatever we needed with most of the built-in functionality. Combined with SharePoint Designer, we've gotten some fairly sophisticated web applications built, without having to do any programming.

My advice to anyone seeking to build an intranet with SharePoint 2010 is to first properly plan and scope your project, and get buy-in from someone who holds the purse strings.

Make sure that you build your farm with at least two servers, a web front-end, and a database back-end.

If you work in a large IT shop, also make sure that you get cooperation from the people that manage your email servers, DNS, and group policies (for site-to-zone assignments).

I believe you'll need a SharePoint Server for Internet Sites license. This server can act as the web front end, which connects to the content and configuration databases of the existing sites.

Why does Bethesda get away with so many glitches and other issues that would make or break other games? by McDublein gaming

Given the size and scale of the game, glitches are to be expected--after all, it was programmed by fallible humans.

That said, they probably left this glaring glitch in the game because they thought it was humorous, and because it didn't break anything other than immersion.

If your PC can handle it, get it for the PC. This gives you access to thousands of mods (which are still being created), which give the game greater replay value and customization.
