Greeks voted themselves the hardest-working country in Europe, with most others saying they were laziest. By hours worked, the Greeks were right. by Brisco_County_IIIin worldnews

[–]AsAnOccultist -1 points0 points ago

Because shitty things happened in history does not mean that they're not relevant to culture. Germans see themselves as extremely hard-working, and take that sometimes to the point of being unable to feel real pleasure. There is a reason that the Nazi party was able to rise there, and the inherent superiority felt by many people commenting about this in reference to the Greeks is staggering. History exists. In America we have a history of slavery and genocide. I don't try to duck that. It's fucking true. I'm sorry that many Germans feel that the Greeks should suffer for their financial "sins". It's a product of German culture, and it's propaganda. It's current propaganda.

What I'm actually saying is that the whole narrative has been, "those lazy shiftless Greeks are not very hard workers, they're corrupt and don't pay their taxes." German commentary has been especially to the tune of the economic sinner/saint when it comes to this issue. The reality is that the Nordic work ethic is different then the Mediterranean work ethic. But it's been cast in a very simplistic way. Yes, I was aware that "Work will set you free" is written on the gates of Auschwitz. But it is a reflection of a pathological strain in the Nordic psyche, that work is the end rather than the means. In the south, work is the means rather than the end. The truth is that the latent nationalism of each country in the Euro is the guarantee of the demise of the whole experiment. Germany and Greece have been exceptionally nationalistic in this whole breakdown. A lot of Germans have bought into the propaganda of the south vs. north, sinner vs. saint mentality and Greece has been the scapegoat.

But deeper than that, the solutions to these problems cannot be papered over and Spain and Italy's problems are becoming more visible every day. You cannot paper over these problems with more paper, (Euro Printing Presses). But nobody wants to admit that at the base, every country is partially responsible for the breakdown. So, you're seeing nationalism and stereotyping come to the foreground in any discussion about these issues. Germany has a rough history with nationalism. Admit it. Those words on the gates came from pretty brilliant propagandists.

You're being propagandized again. Sorry for pointing it out in a shitty way.

Oil prices drop below $89 to 7 month low by ashumanin Economics

[–]AsAnOccultist 15 points16 points ago

This is definitely bad news, but on the other hand, when the economy picks up again, oil prices will go up as well, and put downward pressure on any recovery. It's like an energy see-saw. Get used to marginal recoveries followed by recessions.

That's not an accusation, it's the writing on the wall. I was referring to the protestant work ethic. Sorry it was written on a shameful page of history. Not my doing.

It seems like some people are not buying the simplified "Germans good, Greeks bad" nationalist morality play anymore. Quick, get a Euro bank head to wag their finger and opine about how Greece should take it's loss of sovereignty, the privatization of their country and the extraction of their real wealth and like it.

Greece with it's back to the wall could also take a rash course of action. It could decide to entrench with other players on the great chessboard and tell Europe to go fuck itself. Russia would probably love to have military bases on the Mediterranean, for example. With burgeoning oil wealth, it might be able to stop the bleeding.

Also... Greece is only one part of the great unraveling of the Euro. There is also the bills coming due from Spain and Italy. Where does the money come from to fix these problems? Why should any country sell their children into poverty for piles of cash that go mostly to the oligarchs and the banks anyways? That's the deeper question of this whole financial crisis. Greece and Spain's leaders made some tremendous mistakes, but the actual benefit for the average dude on the street were minimal. S now that the average dude on the street is umemployed looking into a future of no hope and servitude to an unpayable debt burden, tell me why they will assent. With no consent of the governed, there will be a period of tremendously unstable and radical governments.

What views can you hold about Spain? Choose A or B. A: Spain is in a recession, which will end... B: Spain is in a self-cannibalizing downward spiral... by Econimain Economics

[–]AsAnOccultist 0 points1 point ago

All recessions eventually end. But it's looking pretty clear that the great downturn is about to go into it's next phase. Expect delusional bulls, and some more financial chicanery, trying to paper (QE3)(LTRO) over the fundamental problems. With deeply debauched currencies, this will eventually spiral into a deep, probably global bear market late summer to early fall.

Well, we haven't even unraveled to the point of facing Italy's problems either. Anyone that still sees anything besides a major global recession around the corner is selling false sets of securities.

Greece should just leave the Euro, make a deal with the Russians, trade debt financing for a Russian military base and closer relations and watch the Northern Europeans shit themselves. The bailout was always 70% for the banks in the first place. It would be better for Greece to not give up their sovereignty and all their real assets for the fool's gold that's being dangled in front of them.

Honestly, I've been in Salt Lake City for business. I hail from Portland, Oregon. The sex taboo is very strong here. Wherever there's taboo this strong, there's perversion.

I think that all laws governing consensual adult sexual behavior are wrong. Sodomy statutes were wrong, gay marriage bans were wrong, and laws about how many people you can commit to are wrong. What do you think about that r/politics? Would you give Mormons back their polygamy for gay marriage?
